"The Brain" landed himself in detention because he brought a flare gun into school. Theirs is a very sweet and innocent kind of connection and although both realize it will most likely not continue beyond detention, it is clearly a special moment for them both.

She looks at John as if he is something nasty that she has trodden in. It's obvious that she feels she should not be doing detention with the rest of the group because they are beneath her. "The Princess" is easily swayed by her friends, who for the most part are mean girls. His attraction to Claire is genuine, and he also cleverly suggests that a relationship with him would be the perfect fodder for her parents to use in their battle to use her as a weapon against each other. He has a particularly contentious relationship with Principal Vernon, who singles him out for harsh punishment. John is actually extremely insecure and likes to rebel. He is "The Criminal" in the essay written by Brian. He torments Brian for being a nerd his aggression turns out to stem from the fact that he is bullied at home, coming from an abusive household. He torments Claire for her good girl persona, and for being a tease. He is combative, aggressive and has a knack for identifying a person's weak spot, then taunting them about it.
